Basics

Industry Standards

  • Not often sold as a unit, more so attach the ballscrew etc as individual componets
  • Perhaps look into methods of attachment, as well as componet choice for various precision CNC systems

Existing Open Source Designs

Minimum Viable Product

  • Able to withstand cutting cold rolled steel on a CNC mill and other similar challenging workloads
  • Still Modular
  • Easy to Maintain

Basic Design

Ball Screw

  • There are many cheap versions, and these may work, but as pointed out in This Video, by Marco Reps these tend to have lower precision and short lifespan, primarily due to bearing quality (This is less important for softer metals etc, but can introduce problems)
  • steinmeyer was the company Marco Reps used, but they are supposedly VERY expensive (Only have prices via request som probably low-mid thousands of USD or perhaps low 10,000s

Stabalisers

  • Most likely linear rails (Perhaps with air bearings)
  • Linear Bearings on precision rods may work as well
  • This is less important to have max qualitry as the Ball Screws or the CNC Spindle, but still can't hurt, especially for an "endgame" machine, we may step up parts with each build version

End Cap

  • Cheaper Versions Could be Plastic (Perhaps a higher grade such as PC or some type of Engineering Plastic, however metal is more desirable
  • Contains a Bearing Block for the Ballscrew, as well as either a hole for each rod, or attachment points for the linear rails, perhaps also mechanisms to adjusat these for leveling/squaring them in later steps
