On the note of cheap vs expensive engine, Pressure Lubrication would be something i’d consider a need, ALTHOUGH i need data it back up that preference (If it exists, i know Fuel Detergency Additives had at least ‘’’a’’’ study, probably more but it was mentioned in the Top Tier Gasoline bit.

Carburetors can be a bit of a pain, but if maintained right (and not dealing with Total Loss Lubrication gunk of Two Stroke Engines like weedwackers etc they CAN work.

More minor stuff like Tolerances/Metal Choices for things like Bearings (also this ties into lubrication, do the Shell Bearings / Babbit Bearings get fed oil or just splashes of it etc)

Aluminum Block with Cast Iron Sleeve may be the best Off The Shelf option, although cheap parts refinished on OS equipment and ‘’’maybe’’’ even given a DLC or other Plasma Coating may be a way to get a ton of value out of otherwise “cheap” parts

Also if i remember correctly most of the cheaper options are clones so Part Commonality + Part Availability is definitely a valid thing to push for.
