The Founder formulated the Open Source Ecology concept during the last year of his Ph.D. program in 2003. He then started the OSE civilization reboot experiment on a 5 acre parcel on the outskirts of Madison, Wisconsin - and then moved to Missouri to meet initial collaborators. The project has since moved to its permanent site in Maysville, Missouri - home of the Global Village Construction Set experiment.
