Extreme Enterprise Hackathon

In 2021, OSE will be hosting its largest design hackaton yet (canceled due to COVID) - where we aim for 2000 people collaborating on the release of documentation for an enterprise around the Seed Eco-Home 2. This will be a global, remote hackathon. The main tasks during the hackathon will be producing content for a coffee-table book, and a more lengthy Enterprise Manual - that facilitate the widespread replication of an enterprise for building affordable eco-homes anywhere in the world where light frame construction is applicable. The enterprise manual will cover skills, enterprise, and collaboration training that helps the enterprise spread worldwide. Our model of change revolves around access to information, designs, and training as a way to create and distribute best practice in a collaborative way. Our goal is to solve housing.

This will be part of a package where we offer both a turnkey build of a 1000 square foot Incremental House, and a DIY build kit where 2 people can build a 1000 sf home in one week for $50k (land and utility connection is not included). We are also offering training for builders, design training for building variations of the house, and enterprise training for the Seed Eco-Home 2 enterprise. For those who want to step into movement entrepreneurship with OSE's ground-breaking methods of collaborative development, this is also a chance to take a 1 year immersion mentorship for replicating OSE chapters to different locations.

The work during the hackathon will focus around perfecting the documentation based on years of work on the project. This means working on the publication layout, graphic design, instructionals, diagrams, CAD models, renderings, video instructionals, and documenting how to build any of 40 or so main variations of the Seed Eco-Home 2 model. This is intended to be the world'slargest collaborative design/publishing event to date, with widespread enterise startup as an explicit goal.

The hackathon itself will be a 24 hour remote weekend Fri-Sun of August 20-22, 2021. We are offering Collaborative Literacy training for the hackathon, which allows all the hackathon collaoborators to learn the basics of how to collaborate on a large scale. This means where to find information, the open source tools to use, and how to organize the work product in a way that all the information is accessible immediately and editable in realtime by thousands of collaborators across the world. The training consists of 4 hours of video materials - and the training is intended to push the limits of possibility for large teams working across boundaries on an ambitious project. Because the question being asked - how to solve housing - is important and relevant - we think that people will both show up - and the development protocols used will be able to handle the large effort - all using widely accessible and open source software tools, wikis, collaborative online editing, and more. The intent is to push the limits of possiblity in public design for the common good - as part of a historic transition of the economy from proprietary to collaborative.

The hackathon features a well-organized focus, where contibutors are allocated to predefined roles. This is somewhat waterfall in organization style, but this is a minimum coordination required so that little further guidance is necessary once the objectives, admissible procedures, and collaboration methods are clarified. The hackathon requires training prior to the event, and as such is not the typical wild hackathon where good participant fit is not assured and where coordination losses can be significant. In the OSE hackathon, we run a more well-defined procedure. Trusted team members participate in leadership positions. We pay some notable or trusted contributors to show up. Most participants pay a small fee - which is intended to guarantee both the commitment required in terms of getting trained and showing up, and the value received from a unique collaboration experience. The Enterprise Manual will be accessible to the public under an open license. We will offer a hard copy of the coffee table book at a fee for anyone who would like to add it to their library.

Overall Narrative

The goal of the Extreme Enterprise Hackathon is to create a paradigm of collaborative product development. We propose this as the next-step in the evolution of human economic systems away from proprietary development. An issue with the latter is the continuing concentration of wealth and power, which does not contribute to the long-term survival of the species. Development of transparent, open, collaborative economies is not a nice-to-have - it's a necessity.

The hackathon develops clear collaborative protocols - by open-sourcing the product release of the Seed Eco-Home. This means that we focus on the knowhow and process requuired to develop produucts, to lower barriers to entry, and to enable a historic transfer of wealth from the few to the many.

While we refine enterprise assets (designs, build instructions, budgets, marketing assets, business processes, and operations) - we work explicitly on access and teaching others to attain design capacity towards a historic transfer of wealth from the few to the many, with the goal of regenerative solutions at scale.

The audience here is a specific track of collaborative, internet savvy contributors. Contributors are trained for specific tasks that makes them useful as part of a collaboratively literate group event.

The critical skills involve:

  1. Understanding Collaborative Literacy - basic training on how thousands of people can truly work together beyond limits of siloed expertism
  2. Understanding the goals - what are we solving for? We are solving for housing, plastic waste, and economic access. Explain this clearly.
  3. Understanding the tools - how do we use FreeCAD, SweetHome3D, Blender, Kdenlive, and other tools to work effectively?

Incentive Structure

Principles: serious commmitment, with people who want to change the world and are serious about it. But we must deliver on this: OS tractor, 3D printer. This is limited. That's it. Robotics and Aquaponics. From the 2000 participants - everyone gets trained. We provide the support to walk you through the process.

Ideal vision: people are excited about the collaboration opportunity because it brings about a house they will like. Design your dream eco-home. This focuses the market to 'progressive'. But not only that. It builds a community of friends, who solve pressing world issues. If you don't want REAL solutions - do not come. This means you may have to grow or change.

Revisited: we just make it big. We ask big, and rewards are exciting. We will solve housing by allowing anyone who contributes to get a low cost house at material cost + $10k. It must be big. People participating get an extremely good deal.

Problem Statement: Assure that ALL these condititions are met.

  1. People prepare for the event - the alternative being that they don't and they have to be onboarded during
  2. It's something that otherwise won't happen, if we don't get 2000 people, 10,000 donors, funding, to make it happen. It's upon conditional acceptance: if you commit X then Y happens. Specifically, we need the (1) Enterprise Manual; (2) absolutely exhaustive design. We come to it with about 12 different house models to do. We create a generative platform, where we automate fulfillment of all. (2)
  3. It delivers a 3D printer from waste plastic
  4. It delivers an open source tractor - sponsor pays for reward and buildout. Invite some capable players, to play along rules of modularity. Design Rules: 100% modular. People are invited to the Build, funded by Red Bull.
  5. It delivers an open source soil mixer - invite the hammermill maker - $20k project etc.
  6. It delivers an open source house.
  7. It delivers a house customizer - which allows you to build any house.
  8. It delivers a collaborative product design platform - if 20,000 people show up and learn to design together, then we solve design issues rapidly. It builds a community that would otherwise not exist, dedicated to Solving Pressing World Issues Mastermind built around housing which simply funds it.
  9. We create rapid learning material which disills 10,000 years of knowhow into something that anyone can build.
  10. This weekend, we solve housing. With $10M. $300x2000.
  11. You are required to show up for 3 days afterwards to build a house or village, in a workshop volunteer setting.
  12. You get a crash course in Collaborative Design that will transform how you approach any design project in the future.

One Approach

  • Deep dive into collaborative design - the Event is your Exam. Specific deliverables must be met. There are some very rewarding things you get out - rendering, CAD, formatted publishable material. It's like playing a game.
  • We deliver a video game that allows people to build the things in the video game - and we play it massive online. From it, deliberate work parties can draw up build instructions and documents.
  • Each person gets a house - they are first in queue - yes, but that limits the participation. However, it's the strongest motivator. You get a house. You are led into collaboration to get there. The funding covers the necessary resources. If we could come up with a few mil, then we can fund it. But most important - are training protocols to teach people how to Design Together - then act on the things


Think extreme. The extreme reward is a house, and extreme marketing is that tons of funds are spent to get there to advertise. We pump up the features of the house after exact estimate of cost - and deliver the best product. $2500 for build training. OR $300*2000=600000, which gets us a few products out the door. The entire enterprise, in the open source, must be considered.

Fee Structure - FIrst Try

We plan on charging for the event, with 100% of the funding going to scholarships for builders who are interested either in entrepreneurial activity around the Seed Eco-Home 2 - or who would like to get trained and work with OSE - delivering Seed Eco-Homes in any location in the world where light frame construction is relevant in 2021 - and beginning to deliver CEB homes in 2022 and later. We introduce Public Product Development. The buyers are the investors. Maybe the guarantee is Everyone Gets Their Money Back if insufficient numbers show up.

Our logic for charging people is based on the attention requirements to assure that real development work occurs during the Extreme Enterprise. In short, people who are paying for the hackathon are treating it seriously, and are committing to learning a base level of proficiency in collaborative design. This is intended to guarantee that those who sign up for the hackathon will actually show up, as they are invested and the time/cost involved assures the necessary commitment. A minimum of 4 hours of preparation is required for participants so that their participation can be aligned and coordinated. In this sense, this is not a typical free-for-all hackathon where people do more or less as they please - we have a tight focus in terms of delivering documentation and training materials such that the Seed Eco-Home product can be replicated far and wide. We are in large part productizing - by creating training materials for designers, builders, and entrepreneurs involved in brining Seed Eco-Homes to the world - under the premise that we leverage global collaboration to solve housing. This is an ambitious program that includes not only the house structure - but its progressive utility and appliance systems - as well as enabling machines related to housing - such as the tractor, helical pile auger, trencher, backhoe, and 3D printer for converting waste plastic to building products.

In order for people to participate - participants must submit a basic collaboration exercise that tests that they understand the basic collaboration protocols to the point that they can work effectively with 1000s of others as we deliver the Seed Eco-Home Enterprise Manual.

Yet how do we make this free to anyone who wants to participate? We are offering a work-exchange option - where if you want to participate but you do not want to pay - you can do extra preparation work that allows you to participate for free. In addition to the standard collaborative design protocols that everyone must study and get tested upon prior to attending - you will have the option to produce design assets, based on the collaborative design protocols that we will teach you. This is about an 8 hour task - where you have to pick from one of several options - such as turning some part or system of the house into a CAD file, a rendering, animation, graphic asset, concept drawing, diagram, or other piece of documentation related to the enterprise aspect - based on one of several templated protocols that we will teach you.

This is an opportunity for anyone to learn how to work with digital design models - and how to collaborate and interoperate with many others using a suite of open source software tools.
