Basics

  • Making this page to keep short non ranty (or at least less ranty) / link spam ideas on here rather than User Eric’s Temporary Trashcan Page or in my Daily Log
  • Mainly just getting ideas out of my head and onto the internet so if I don’t get around to them first someone else can see it and do something with it

Thoughts from a Pig Cleaning wearing a Fogged Up Full Face Air Purifying Cartridge Respirator

  • A Full Face Respirator that has:
    • A means to “blow off” water that condenses inside it and collects in a sort of drainage channel/area
      • This would be ESPECIALLY easy to implement in SAR / PAPR mode
    • Also may run into issues with the whole All Valves Leak type thing/how to implement this in something that needs to keep IDLH stuff OUT
      • Although might be less strict if this is intended for less IDLH, more Chronic Exposure Risk stuff like Pig Cleaning Splatter/Vapor, Painting, etc (vs Confined Space Entry / “Major Nasties”
  • A non-mechanical or motoroized “Interim Faceshield Wiper” that functions in a similar manner to those “Magnetic Fish Tank Scrapers”
    • Basically you have a microfiber cloth or silicone coated magnet on the inside and outside, the user pulls the one on the outside (while leaving the mask ON) and is able to clear fog/debris without removing gear (at least rudimentarily)
    • Straps that go UNDER the ears for more even clamping
      • The current “state of the art” is one strap over the head, two inline straps at about eye level going horizonal, then two a bit above chin level also going horizontal
      • To prevent it gradually riding up/shimmying off your face (and thus loosing a good seal/being a major PITA), having something to mirror that top strap’s force may be nice
    • Also either via haptic clicks, or measuring tape style marks, having some means to easily check if the straps are even (and thus the force is even) is another feature that would be nice
  • FINALLY for Air Purifying Respirator Cartriges (such as P-100 + Organic Vapor) for the “flat filter face” having a Splatter Guard / Diffuser such that on-face splatter doesn’t go directly into the Filter Paper and Compromise the System (and instead goes on a deflector plate which can be removed and wiped off, or replaced with a spare) would be VERY nice
    • Also as per that Small Engine Shop “filter tester” idea, a means to Quantitatively test how clogged a particulate filter is and/or how “spent” the GAC or other OV Adsorbant is would be VERY nice
    • Also for a permanent option, do catalytic systems such as that ISS Derived Deodorizer exist?
      • Granted Cost+Complexity+Another point of failure, but mag be nice, especially for systems such as a PAPR that are more permanent/ALREADY expensive

More Misc/Dumb Ideas

NESS
  • ”New and Exciting Sample Seeker” or Ness / nessy (could do the art like someone leaning out of a boat trying to record what the loc ness monster sounds like)
    • Essentially do various goofy/interesting things, but record the sounds using high quality mics, and release them Open Source as a Sample Pack
    • Dropping various percussion instruments down stairs, or putting them in a Tumble Dryer etc for some noise/industrial/ironic making fun of that critique of breakcore etc would be a start
    • Also just open source ambiance/various wildlife etc
    • Main things would be 1.) It’s Neat 2.) Help out Game Developers / Musicians / Folley People for TV+Films etc with high quality OS stuff
Camping Gear
  • A Trangia compatible Pressure Cooker
  • This isn’t something i’m AS sure about, BUT:
    • A System for Melting Snow for Drinkwater wherein it is essentially an Insulated Heat Exchanger Pressure Cooker (with a sight glass up top for checking on it) that has a draw off top and maybe a hinged lid too
      • Basically as efficiently and/or fast as possible melt down the snow, while also allowing water to be “tapped off” without needing to remove it and pour some out/mess with a ladle
      • Making a wide temp swing+potentially dirt tolerant valve may be tricky, but POTENTIALLY one of those “marble in a t-fitting on too of a smaller hole/o-ring type thing may work well
  • A Liquid Fuel Stove Valve that:
    • Has a conventional Coleman/MSR/Polaris etc style air pump, but also
    • Has a Schrader Valve to allow for use of a larger air compressor as a pump (either for convenience or if the main pump fails)
      • This may lend itself well to larger models with a pressure gauge/pressurized air tank+regulator better too, ALTHOUGH this could also be sold as an aftermarket “christmas tree” (the oilfield term) that attaches either directly to, or via a short hose to, the cap with the schrader valve
  • A Hard Anodized Heat Exchanger Fin Kettle that fits the Trangia Form Factor (if one doesn’t already exist)
  • A Hard Anodized Drop in Replacement for the Trangia Spirit Burner
    • May be thermal conductivity issues? Also if they use Lead Free Brass , it being brass isn’t TOO MUCH of a concern, short of Galvanic Corrosion if in a nested form without protection (such as a bag)
      • Speaking of bags…a MOLLE/PALS Compatible Bag for the Trangia Nested Setup would be VERY nice
        • Although a stuffsack / attaching it via straps isn’t HORRIBLE and probably works for plenty of people as is
  • A Modification of the Bio-Lite Stove such that
    • It is a small K Type Rocket Stove
    • It either improved Dry Cooling via devices such as a Heat Pipe or Vapor Chamber (Thermal Management Device + the fan/radiator assembly, and/or a system akin to miniaturized Hopper cooling that can be drained to reduce carry mass then filled in the field
      • This is all in the aim of improved TEG preformance
    • Furthermore there should be a Hot Swappable 18650 system, and an option to start on External Power (either USB in from a portable battery bank, or other power such as 12v via adapters etc
      • A Supercapacitor or similar system may aid in “hot swappablel holdover storage
    • If a K Type Rocket Stove, or even a serpentine modification of one proves too unwieldy, a similarly TLUD system as the conventional biolite but with some means to remove Bottom Ash / Char such as:
      • A Claw Base akin to a Grab Dredger (so pressing a button/pulling a lever dumps the ash/coals down below
        • This is less ideal due to the potential for too much to fall out etc, but may be able to be modified into something workable
      • A Dual Knife Gate based Airlock
        • Proper airtighness may not be needed, but (as demonstrated by Windhager) this allows for continuous ash removal without the complexity of a Rotary Airlock
    • Having the ports be some locking/weatherproofed form of Framework modular ports would be nice too
A Simplified Communication Device for CSE Work / Work in Full Face Respirators without Coms
  • This is partially inspired by the Accessibility Aids like those “talk boards” partially paralyzed people can use etc
    • Also partially inspired by the system the person using a Bresthable Liquid Respirator uses in “The Abyss”
  • Essentially though have a board that is worm on the wrist, and has a screen somewhere between a watch and a smartphone
    • It used a Membrane Keyboard that can be easily wiped off/pressure washed even
    • It is Intrinsically Safe + Explosion Proof
    • It could communicate locally via a speaker/buzzer/light system, OR could send a TTS Radio Signal
      • This could be user adjusted, or configured ahead of time, BUT ESSENTIALLY:
        • Could have a 2 Button Noun + Condition Describing Adjective Macro Like:
          • ”Hot Water” + “Not Working?”
          • or “Pressure Washer” + “Not Working?”
          • or “Faceshield” + “Needs Cleaned”
          • or “Pressure Washer + “Needs Fuel”
          • Having buttons for “Me” , “You” , and maybe numbers for Tank Entrants etc
            • So like: “Me + Person 2 + Person 3 + Needs Drinking Water.”
      • Having a numpad + a “.” , “, or +” , “?” , and “!” / anger or emergency modifier would be nice too
        • Could also have a panic button/both ways “get the hell out of there” button + alarm
          • So if you’re pressure washing away in a corner, instead of someone having to grab you/shine their light at you, you just feel your wrist communicstor pad thing go crazy and start flashing then you know what you need to do
          • Alternatively, if any of the Tank Entrants (CSE Work) or Hole Watch (CSE Work) notice anything bad they can press+hold the panic button or whatever macros is used to prevent false alarms, and every paired device knows what they need to do
            • Could even integrate with Fire Alarms etc, but given that is site specific “that’s never gonna happen” (although cellular emergency alert for weather could maybe integrate with a phone paired base station/the hole watch’s phone etc)

  • ”How’s That Battery Doing” / “How are Those Batteries Doing” software (abbreviated HTBD or HATBD)
    • Basically whenever you buy a Power Tool Battery you input it’s info (Model Number, Serial/Batch Number, etc)
      • Then depending on type (and thus Self Discharge Rate ) it reminds you to charge/check the battery
    • Could also be used for Alkaline Leak Detection/Prevention
      • Just reached for my Non-Contact Voltmeter only to find it’s off brand battery that came with it WAS still inside it and got all corroded, potentially ruining the whole thing 😮‍💨
    • ALSO could automate “How long did this last” calculations + help with warranty claims
    • To an extent might be useful for Lightbulbs etc too (although sharpie on non visible backside of date of install works well for this)

  • A Three Part Plastic Alternative to Battery Taping
  • A Clothes Tumble Dryer that has:
    • A Sealed System HEPA for the exhaust such that:
      • No Micro/Nano Plastic Pollution goes into the vent (which also helps prevent Dryer Exhaust Fires as long as to doesn’t just move them “upstream”
      • Adequate Washable Prefilters are a must to make frequent filter changes not needed
        • ALTHOUGH some means of M/NP Destruction, such as incineration, may be ideal over “pulling the lint off” of a filter and releasing tons of fibers
            • ALTHOUGH if it could be “wetted” akin to asbestos, may be able to remove it
      • Some sort of metal filter that could survive being put in a campfire of something would be neat
    • Alternatively rather than worrying about that, just have a vacuum cleaner nearby/something to be a Fume Hood for that dust

  • A (Rectangular) Mess Tin but:
    • Optimized for use with a Larger (and Vacuum Insulated) Box which could be made:
      • For getting the maximum amount of heat out of a Flameless Ration Heater
      • For getting the maximum amount of heat out of a DC-Heater (which as per MRE Oven can be used for FRH Preheating etc)
    • While also retaining the ability to be used as is/directly over a fire/stove etc
    • Solid Fuel Tablet Stoves optimized for this form factor (preferably with heat exchangers for bulkier versions) would be nice as well
    • Also MOLLE/PALS Compatible Softshell Cases
  • Novel Applications of Synthetic Spider Silk (unless someone did a PROPER patent on this already, need to look into this later; Existing Synthetic Spider Silk Patents etc)
  • A “Wheel Chock” but optimized for reducing roll of Pipeline Pigs in the Pipeline Pig Decontamination process
    • A Triangular Block that is heavy and pressure washable + has a handle on one side would be ideal
      • Potentially even just a tapped Stainless Steel Block may be great if it’s heavy enough to work but not too heavy to safely move
    • Also that Pipeline Pig Washer concept (if i didn’t ramble about it on here yet)
  • A Firestarter made of a more reactive/“spicy” mix that is encapsulated in wax for storage/safety reasons
    • Once the wax layer is burnt up/scraped off it GOES (akin to that (potentially patented) “hell’s putty” which is like energetic mix with Magnesium Chips / Magnesium Millings mixed in

  • ASMBL but utilizing (mildly, such as CF potentially?) a means to electrify the part as it is printed, but especially milled, akin to Powder Coating , such that the M/Np Pollution is directed towards the negative charged suction exhaust moreso
    • May need to pulse the power every so often to prevent “stalagtites” / clogs in the suction nozzle/hose?
    • ASMBL toolhead for the Prusa XL too!
  • A “Patio Fire Tornado Tube” style Pellet Stove, however:
    • Either a port for ignition, or a lifting mechanism akin to what I described for the “ultimate hurricane lantern”
    • Dedicated ash removal, ideally a rotary airlock (or primitive adaptation of the concept)
    • Potentially Angled Annular Secondary Air etc (potentially with blowers, thermoelectric when ‘that patent’ expires) and/or impinging fins and/or fins at the top to encourage “tornado” formation
  • A Hot Tent Stove with optional Pellet / Wood Chip Hopper, and dedicated ash removal
  • A (Goofy) Device for Electric Vehicle Low Speed Noise Generation configured to:
    • Increase noise / modify it when pedestrians/animals are detected and based on proximity to them
      • This could also be done to play the “Jaws Theme” and thematically change it as you approach lol
    • Also could give users tunable aspects/different versions of said noise
  • A “VDU Kiln” wherin Oil/Resedue can be “cooked” out of something, but it is then fed to a Flare Stack , VDU , or VRU rather than to atmosphere
  • A miniaturized version with (mostly) solar thermal heating akin to a Solar Wood Kiln would be especially nice
    • GAC Adsorption and/or a Woodchip Biofilter may be ideal for smaller systems such as these
  • A Propane-Plasma (or Battery HV) hybrid Blowtorch (instead of piezo ignition)

  • A Hybrid Between a UCO Candle Lantern and a Hurricane Lantern
    • The Fuel Stability of Candles, but the Wind Resistance of Hurricane Lanterns
  • A Hurricane Lantern using Linear Rails (or something similarly overkill) for lifting the glass riser, rather than a wire/cam like the Feurhand Lantern
  • A Butane - Plasma Lighter based “hybrid” Zippo Lighter Insert
  • An Automatic Folding Lantern / Stonebridge Candle Lantern but modernized via:
  • A Means for Battery Electric Vehicle Firefighting (and to a lesser extent larger Battery Storage Unit Firefighting) consisting of:
    • A Fire Blanket and Ergonomic Aids for it’s Deployment (Hooks/Grommets and Rope and/or Hand Tools + A Bag it Deploys Out of etc
    • A Dry Fog / Mist etc Pancake Nozzle (Firefighting) (for thermal reduction, but also potentially “cutting down” Particulate Matter, VOCs, and other HAPs (in a manner akin to pressure washing in a tank, or Steam Stipping etc
    • An Intrinsically Safe Fan and/or Explosionproof Fan + Fire Resistant Ducting such that air is circulated through the plenum under the Fire Blanket+Vehicle to reduce the risk of Flammable Gas Buildup
      • A Flare Stack or VDU could be used, or potentially just a Filter Box / Tube of GAC then vent to atmosphere
    • Use of Spill Boom/Flexible Spill Dikes and a Vacuum Hose could also allow for collecting of polluted water
    • All in all this approach of WaterC Fire Blanket, and Explosive Gas/Pollution Control may make wuite the system
      • Would be SOMEWHAT expensive, but a Tow Behind Trailer + a bit of Off The Shelf Environmental Service Gear (Cam Lock Fittings, Hoses, “Copus Fans”, potentially even Inert Gas Cylinders etc) could make a kit for BEV Fire Response than could Stabilize things long enough for a Forklift/Tow Truck (for repositioning of the burning BEV and/or moving it into a scaled up spill pallet (or just Roll Off Box / Air Curtain Burner but for flaming BEVs), and Vac Truck/Full on Environmental Services spill response team (to contain+adsorb and transport off the adsorbent+PCW etc) to arrive as well
    • If funds permit it, having a means of measuring/inspecting under the blanket via a probe or rover etc may also be worthwhile
  • A Liquid Fuel Storage Bottle that is:
    • A Hybrid between the MSR Fuel Bottle and the Trangia Fuel Bottle
      • It has the Impact Extrusion ultra-durable bottle of MSR
        • Although Hard Coat Anodization and either no paint, or non-MNP pollution concern Powder Coating Materials like PLA or PHA , or maybe Japanning etc
        • A MOLLE/PALS Compatible Bottle Holster, as well as Multi-Bottle Gridfinity esque bottle transporters would be nice as well
      • It has the easy pour dispenser of the Trangia Style Design
        • To prevent accidental spills, the screw should have a locking pin, or be a nozzle that is unscrewed and replaced with a MSR style screw cap for tranport; a flip between the two may also work
        • Finally for redundancy+damage protection, a Thermos style Threaded EXTERNAL cap + O-Ring could be used as well
      • Models with Vacuum Insulation may be worth investigating
      • Using similar form factor bottles for Propane would be neat in that gear could fit either
        • Probably not IDEAL, but for something below a 1lb Fuel Keg one could perhaps make the case
      • Laser Engraved HAZCOM labels for Kerosene / Paraffin , White Gas / Gasoline , Fuel Alcohol , or Single Fuel Concept Fuel would be neat

  • A better pump sprayer:
    • Jerry Can type design for overall ergonomics
    • Utilize an external air pump and anti-backflow valves for durability, rather than an integrated pump assembly that leaks/falls apart/has the handle integrated as the pump etc
    • Also maybe make the base wide/have some removable boot UNLIKE a jerry can but so that it doesn’t tip over easily etc
  • Though about it a WHILE back, so may already be in this list but basically the tech behind those Improved Pit Latrines but adapted to Biodrying / Aerobic Digestion or Anaerobic Digestion in Dumpsters
    • Also would want those anti-ant moats, secondary containment/adsorption of dumpster juice, and GAC on the Solar Chimney for Odor+Fly Control (have mesh on the chimney too)
    • Could use a standard dumpster BUT
      • It goes into a “dock”
      • The bottom is replaced with a mesh and/pr grate for aeration
      • A Fitting is added to the top for suction/chimney
      • Painted black for Solar Thermal etc
    • Could also integrate load cell based “fullness” detection potential, but more gimmick than the other features tbh

  • A Modern Flintlock Lighter that is less gun-derived
    • Neat in terms of Appropriate Materials and quite slick, but most are basically just flintlock musket's adapted into a fancy aristocractic lighter
    • Modern Manufacturing + Skimping on some parts (such as fancy finishes / handle material) + adapting for use with more conventional modern tinders (rather than a Tinderbox or Black Powder) would be neat
  • A Kelly Kettle but improved via Vacuum Insulation or at LEAST an air gapped wall
    • Especially with Additive Manufacturing , although not necessarily, one could do all sorts of stuff like make the Chimney a Coil / more serpentine, add Heat Exchanger Fins to that, Integrate a Burner (For Propane etc) make a Solo Stove type Secondary Air inlet for use on Wood Fire etc
  • A Vacuum Thermos / Water Bottle "Crumple Zone" Layer based off of either Expanded Metal (Packing or a Formed Unit), or via Additive Manufacturing
    • Granted a "Cozy" or Elastomer based sacrificial outer layer is obviously still nice, but figured something integral to the bottle / made of fireproof metal may be of use in some contexts
  • Pepper Spray / Bear Spray with an Integrated Aiming Laser and Auditory Alarm (Triggered Upon Using/When an Arming Pin is Pulled etc)
    • Seen both of those available SEPARATELY off the shelf, but none in some unified unit
  • 18650 Cell or Tri-AAA Battery Run (With Design for Alkaline or Ni-MH Rechargeable)
  • Consumer Butane and Propane Tanks with a Vapor Return Port
    • Butane Lighter could be two pins, one snaking to the top of the tank (may need to be an internal tube/less easily done due to the low cost of the refill tanks)
      • Potentially using a LARGER Butane tank, and having it be done as a service could be done as well "50 Cents for a Lighter Refill" etc
      • For Propane, need to look into if the existing Autogas / CNG Standards have a return line
      • All else that would be needed would be the right adapters, of which they MAY be able to screw on a standard 20lb tank etc
  • A Desiccant System Like This but using a (Non-Cobalt etc) Color Indicating Silica Gel, inside a Fine Stainless Steel or Hard Coat Anodized Aluminum Canister
    • Could also have either a Microscope Slide (For Glass) or Sapphire Watch Glass (For more scratch resistant Glass) Option to view the color indicating
    • A similar system could also work well for Granulated Activated Carbon etc
      • Either semi-disposable, or with some Steam Regeneration Flow Through Base
        • Could even make a neat Kettle / Steam Boiler Unit for that
  • A Megaphone That:
    • Uses 18650 Cells or a PILE of AA/AAA Cells in Adapters (or SOME SORT of standardized rechargeable arrangement)
    • Also has a 12v Barrel Jack or USB-C Power In (for use independent of batteries) (Also could configure for charge-through)
    • Audio in/out 9 3.5mm Jack would be the standard, XLR would be a nice splurge
    • Also one of those Handheld Radio standards for the removable microphone bit
    • Almost all OTS units use an integral or custom rechargeable battery, or a PILE of D Cells
    • Also a hardwired microphone or none etc

  • Was pressure washing off the containment by the Tank Farm
    • Had me thinking of:
      • Using Paraffin Wax / Something akin to Japanning as a Concrete Coating
        • A Method of Testing the Biodegradation Rate of Non-Paint Coatings via having a modified Petri Dish with two sections:
          • A Cylindrical Tube with Graduations to determine Wear Rate
          • A “detection” agar or other media to determine when something has “broken through”
          • Main downsides to this method would be the time it takes for some materials, and the data only being relevant to whatever Microbes / Surface Microbiome is used
            • Having standardized pure strains + mixes + local swabs would probably suffice, albeit requiring much testing
