Basics
- Referred to as Stanscrap
- A Standardization System for use of Scrap / Recycling / Upcycling
- Similar to what Open Source Low Tech uses
- Akin to how separating some types of metals and plastics makes sense for recycling, seperating these out of other waste streams may make sense
- For instance the Cardboard Tubes from paper towels may have more use being used as is, rather than being sent to Paper Recycling . Same thing for a Two Liter Bottle vs PET Regrind . It is easier to use the bottle (or many of them), than to Blow Mold something of a similar use case in many situations
Materials List
Beverage Cans
- Can be melted down like other Metal Scrap , but could also be used to produce crude tubes/pipes
- See Solar Air Heater and some Rocket Stove designs
- Need to see if there are standardized sizes
(Glass) Bottles
- Can be washed and reused if in good condition
- If not could be used for Photo-Bioreactors
- They can be adapted to skylights (See Liter of Light )
- Finally can be ground into a standard Aggregate , Abrasive , and maybe even made into Glass Wool / Glass Fiber ?
- Could also be (melted and poured into larger sheets first if need be, then) broken and smoothed into sections for Mosaics and Backsplashes
Corrugated Containerboard
- "Cardboard"
- Any Standard Box Sizes?
- Also can just say "cut to 0.5 meter sheet" etc
- Can be cut by hand, via Dragknife, or with a Lasercutter
- Rigid, Lightweight, Insulative, and Common/Cheap
Food Cans
Liquid Packaging Board
- What "Juice Boxes" "Box Wine" and similar products use
- Essentially a semi-rigid, durable, waterproof/vaporproof, insulative textile
- Outside of seams may be comparable to Tyvek ?
Metal Scrap
- Reuse "as is" if possible for Offcuts
- If melted try and keep as "Pure" as possible
- Get makerspaces to have an X-Ray Florescence Gun for measuring scrap metal ingot compositions?
- Granted not accessible until a company makes such a device, and/or a FLOSH design is made
Paper Towel / Toilet Paper Cardboard Tubes
- Look and see if there are standardized dimensions
- Can be used to an extent as Structural Tubing for low stress applications
- Could also be used as a (disposable?) core for those Fiber Reinforced Tubes on the machine that makes those (insert name here)
Plastic Bottles
- 1L and 2L "Soda Bottles" make pretty good, albeit low density, compressed air tanks
- They can also be used for Photo-Bioreactors
- They can be adapted to skylights (See Liter of Light )
Vulcanized Rubber Tyres
- Will exist nearly anywhere wheeled vehicles are common
- Is there a common standardized width?
- Need to document those standards
- Can be used as is for things like Roof Shingles , Shoes , Crash Barriers (like in F-1), as a bench/chair, as a Tyre Swing, or for Animal Agility Courses
- ...And More
- Can be shredded into Rubber Mulch (Although may be some environmental risks with the usage of this)
- Can also be ground into Crumb Rubber , which can be used in a similar manner to Rubber Mulch , or mixed with a binder to make a spongey material (need to grab the specific name), or added to Asphalt Concrete to make Rubberized Asphalt which tends to be more durable
- Also VERY weatherproof
Wood / Wood Scrap
- Already common place, and standardized via standard wood shapes (2x4's and all that)
- Bamboo and on-site Engineered Wood Products may be an area to explore
