Extreme Enterprise Hackathon Design

From Open Source Ecology
Jump to: navigation, search

Outcome

The outcome is simple: enabling anyone in the industrialized world to design and build their own custom home like a pro, code compliant, with all necessary building documents - using a 100% open source tool chain and global collaboration - for the highest performance, shortest build time, and lowest cost possible. And moving on to natural and recycled materials in year 2.

Messaging is: we need 2000 people, a support team, and lots of effort to publish. We're not running the hackathon unless we get 2000 people signed up, a high quality publication guaranteed, cost breakthroughs achieved, and built capacity to produce 1000 houses like this per year minimum.. and committed to show up.

Summary: enable anyone to design their own house like a pro, and to build it easily with a friend or group.

  1. The Why: advanced design is made up of but tiny pieces. Any complex product is made up of thousands of steps - but each of them is easy. To get rubber for car tires - it starts with a person taking a hammer and a tap. Together, we can opensource it to allow rapid learning, because rapid learning does not happen today yet.
  2. Expand on downward selection. Specialization is one of these - we destroy the world because we establish one viewpoint, at the expense of all others. Specialization gets us to the Roman Empire, but the heart of rome was not the marble of the senate - it was the sand of the coliseum. Make this point so plain, that it dumbfounds people, produces a paradigm shift.
  3. Imagine having the best tools availed at anyone's fingertips - as advanced learning is just learning that is beyond today's system where we only get the second best. Insidious.
  4. Open tools can be created.
  5. We can evolve to freedom. Immediately.
  6. By creating an open source genius network. Where all the tools are accessible. Every YT vidoe is topgraded.
  7. The promise of rapid learning. It is simply necessary for survival.
  8. How beautiful would it be if we could gain rapid access to learning everything, without having to suffer through the internet or through school? What if all knowledge were accessible. Wikipedia is a good start. That needs to translate to product design.
  9. The promise is: collaborative creation of genius on a mass scale: nothing short of mass creation of genius. How many Einsteins could there be, if we could only learn a bit more effectively? And the whole downward selection would cease? In school, we teach to the slowest. In prep school, we teach the second best. In the ivy league, we teach competition, as that is the way of the world. We destroy nations - such as natives or different races, as they are different. Why don't we learn to expand our powers, so we don't have to destroy others' lives to do it.
  10. Let's stop the mass creation of cogs in the system.
  11. Hash tag star trek replicator for everybody.

How to optimize for clear, visible product - which provides a sense of fulfilment?

  1. There must be significant progress on economically-significant output. These products include: coffee table book, enterprise training, sales website (clickfunnels or similar), immersion training, Enterprise Information.
  2. Key asset is a detailed build video that allows for widespread replication. This video combines animations from FreeCAD, walkthroughs from FreeCAD, Blender animations, scripts, music, text overlays, interesting transitions, ie Collaborative Video Protocol. Likewise, there must be a Collaborative Publishing Protocol. Collaborative Enterprise Development Protocol. Collaborative Marketing Protocol. And much more. As long as there is a complete video repository (for build procedure generation), a complete CAD repository of all parts, exhaustively, and a complete BOM including vBOM-CAD reconciliation - then everything can happen.
  3. It must absolutely be generative, through the SweetHome3D designer, and FreeCAD designer. Enough work must occur on the SweetHome3D designer that the process can be tapped for the Hackathon by many others. Not first priority - but second priority - as first priority is producing the Build Video, comprehensive and complete CAD, and
  4. Specific, tangible results must be beautiful and inspiring - with the secret being inclusiveness towards collaborative creation of genius. It could also include a mass synthesized chorus of "welcome - to the collaborative design and build of the Seed Eco-Home". For video edits, CAD, enterprise development, marketing development, collaborative publishing - a sophisticated protocol must be evolves, accepting different levels of skills based on Edison's 99% perspiration concept. First, recognizing that ideas are cheap, though precious. What? An idea is easy - the difficult part is execution. An idea is precious at the same time - without it, there is no meaningful purpose. But the point is - most work of execution takes the long time of actually doing laborious steps. This process can span many different skill levels. Experienced people - architects and system engineers in a broad sense - can understand many steps of a development process. Less experienced people can execute specific steps. Point is: each step is not overwhelming to learn - and in fact can be learned in a few minutes to a few hours - yet will combine to a powerful product. Such as a complex design of the entire house and its utility, human factors subsystems. Well, any individual can be equipped to design a single part of this. And designing a single part or modules can take hours. That's where we estimate, the total dev time for the Seed Eco-Home is 48000 human hours - or 24 human years. 2000 people can do this in a 3-day weekend. This would repeat for any other model - but in our construction set approach - we reduce that to perhaps 1/50th the 'reinvent the wheel' effort - because we design modules, patterns - a pattern language of design with open source tools that can be built upon.
  5. So the bottom line is a development architecture of many steps. All these steps are well-defined - they come from existing product development practice. All we need to do - is convert every step - to using open source tools - and updating the protocol for massive parallel swarm - instead of typical linear development.
  6. The bottom line is training a large number of collaborators - on tasks that require a 4 hour time budget to learn, with 4 key videos: 1 Collaborative Literacy (philosophy (mind shift, we're all in it together, distributed market substitution), principles (taxonomy, process, open tools, inclusiveness, transformation), and practice (protocols, quantifying economic benefit, developing kick-ass products)) - 2 design of the subject matter (house) - 3 specific tools - SweetHome3D, FreeCAD, Blender, Inkscape, Gimp, Kdenlive, Google Photos and Slides - and 4 - enterprise development (philosophy, principles, practice). This all together would be absolutely empowering, as it can possibly shift the midset of many participant to expand the scale of their thinking to accept the value and meaning of 'open, collaborative development.' That is priceless, as our goals are nothing short of an evolutionary-scale cultural shift - learnable through practice.
  7. This requires commitment. People pay for certification to participate. Their exam is documenting a tiny element of protocols - so they actually contribute to the greater whole with micro-contributions, succeeding in time-binding and furthering the protocols peace by piece - building upon work that already exists. The key is understanding as much of the process architecture as possible. A minimum threshold that makes a contributor useful - must be met - and stuck with all determination - because of the long-term view of the project. People pay to get trained, and they can get discounts on products that actually come out of the process - such as at-cost book, price paid goes to hands-on training and other ways of accessing the product - up to the turnkey house builds.

Addendum 3/27/21

  • The common theme is upgrading resources to higher quality. This approach is how we can involve large numbers of people in distilling information and adding value. Not necessarily systems thinking integration - but specific upgrading of information for rapid learning. This is consistent with Become immortal - do open source. You develop once - for the benefit of all civilization.
  • The key insight here is that information quality suffers in the digital age, as most people produce spam. This drowns out wisdom, in which case explicit mechanisms for the collaborative creation of genius must be created.
  • The brand of the event is around solving pressing world issues through collective intelligence - where you are an essential element of it.
  • Examples: upgrade copious video, graphics, CAD, diagrams into more distilled form.

Summary 3/11/21

We go into it: Hello. We're going to solve housing. What does that mean? It means... (brief enunciation). Are you ready?

Big point: it takes tremendous effort to do a full digital design made of thousands of parts. But - this is necessary to make the product efficient and replicable. Otherwise we leave all the work to local ingenuity. But our goal is larger: to solve housing. So that anybody can replicate as easily as possible. The problem becomes tractable once enough people show up. But that is the only way that this can happen! So we are not starting unless we get 1000 pre-qualified pre-orders.

We have a small incentive- you have a chance to be put in line for the house. You must qualify - by finding or providing a suitable building lot for a 1000 sf house.

2000 people, $300 each, explicit process for 3D printer and Tractor via HeroX. You commit to solving housing by getting training - under the assumption that all solutions are already here, and we just need to elicit collective genius. The innovation is a compelling narrative that is created that says 'Yes' - which explains how the result will be achieved and wealth distributed. Collective genius means we create and publish the best design, free and open to everyone, we create a training program to scale delivery, and we create feedback loops for improvement as well as R&D capacity for transformation to local material sourcing (dirt, lumber, plastic, steel).

The promise is rapid learning, for 5 teams - via creation of icons for design in 2D and 3D, all reconciling one another as admissible parts. Basic Design Guide is prepared for each, so that a novice follows a basic methodology to come up with design like a pro. This is simply the digitization of design knowhow:

  1. Problem definition - Starting with MTP. fast, cheap, good, breaking the iron triangle.
  2. Analysis of industry standards - what exists already? How do you find out? How to access inaccessible sources such as academic journals? What are all the best design repositories and databases in existence, cataloguing the sum of all human knowledge? Who are the best insitutions working on issues? Here we teach you how to stand on the shoulders of giants.
  3. Modular Breakdown - a problem can be broken into its parts. Here we teach you how.
  4. Swarming - After breakdown, we can leverage crowds. Here we teach you how. Not to turk the crowd - but how to work with and empower the crowd. This requires rapid onboarding - so rapid learning materials, training, Design Guides, Part Libraries, Icon Sets for Pattern Language-based Design, calculations, algorithms, logic - can get you to solutions.
  5. Socratic Thinking - asking what and why, and including mental, emotional, personal, political aspects is unleashed.
  6. Creating Agency - creating producers, not consumers.

For some of the critical enabling tools, here are ways to get started in design:

  1. House design - 100 key reusable modules completed in detail
  2. Aquaponic greenhouse design - 100 icons, part library items in SH3D & FreeCAD

So how do 2000 design novices design a real house? By collaborating. You see, an entire house is complex. Thousands of parts. So the solution is obvious: bring in 1000s of people! Wikipedia and crowd design platforms have already shown us that thousands of people can contribute - for example to Wikipedia - the encyclopedia that ate Encyclopedia Britannicas' lunch in 2013. Well the same thing can happen for complex design.

You see, a house is no secret. A house is completely understood - but how do you design all kinds of houses? By understanding the parts that go into it, and what they do. Call it a design pattern language. Then we can use this language - if we have a part library of admissible parts - parts we know that any house will use. So like lego blocks - we can design any house. We first define what goes into a house, then select the parts, then arrange them.

During the Hackathon, we will work with an easy-to-understand a visual library of parts, build diagrams, and instructionals for how to design and modify a house. This is our Design Guide. And, we will assemble a dozen or more variations of the house for different contexts - from the desert to the arctic, and from a 256 square foot microhouse to a much larger mansion. All custom. We will also start a crowd challenge on a high temperature 3d printer that starts from waste plastic as a feedstock. And since we'll need some equipment to build, we'll design a crowd challenge for a tractor.

We will publish a quality book on How to Solve Housing. With input from heavyweight practitioners of the progressive design world. Alejandro Aravena. Alastair Parvin. Vivihouse. Amory Lovins. And more. People who have digital regenerative communities in mind.

But what can you do in 3 days? 3 days is a start. The intended audience is anyone who wants to build this house, or have this house built for them. If you build yourself, it's $50k in materials for 1000 sf. If we build it for you, it will be $50k in addition to the materials.

It is only the beginning. We are asking you to commit - to solving housing. What does it mean? First, we avail the lowest possible cost, most robust, most optimal design free to the world. Second, we create a training program, where we can train up to 200 people per a 3 month period. So that we can deliver 16,000 houses in the first year. Signing up for the Hackathon is your first step - if you want to commit to solving housing - by learning how to design collaboratively - and then continuing feedback loops so that the product keeps up with the times.

Third - we produce supporting equipment - starting with waste-to-plastic, and tractors.

Fourth - we move on to local materials production for ciruclar economies. That includes plastic, lumber, CEBs, steel, and concrete - literally from trash, trees, dirt, junkyard, and rock - all in the local area. Our model for low cost housing - in addition to standard open design and build service - is to get materials for free - using a loan of enablin equipment from our equipment lending library - at $10k for a month. You pay us $10k, we train you on the equipment, and you can build a house for an extra $20k in materials. Until we produce the extra materials - where you can build your own house almost for free. It's about time to remove material scarcity from human existence.

Design

General design: masses fund it, masses participate in numerous tasks to which they are educated to collaborate upon, and peak performers are paid to help attract the masses, and $150k proto budget ($75/person) is disbursed in the 3 days, not before or after to keep the intensity up. Main roles are architecture, design, prototype, document. Documentation is the masses - enabled by collaborative literacy. Architecture is the heavyweight modular product management. Design is the SMEs, and prototype is the reification that happens in realtime during the event with qualified people.

  • Minimum of 2000 people - event is not held unless 2000 people commit. This allows for a significant prototyping budget, and jobs to be created for the lead organizers based on outcome. Proper incentivization.
  • Extreme_Enterprise_Event_Design#Extreme_Rules
  • Product is the interior design-less version - which is filled in as needed via crowd contributions. Could definitely do a contest.

Microtasks

Specifically defined microtasks for the Hackathon can assure a high level of coordination along specific development points required for success at scale. To this end, we are defining specific tasks, which individuals with a specific skill set, can contribute to. As usual, we focus on tasks that create rapid learning resources. Thus, whenever we ask for a certain task, we always ask for metalevel Design Guides that would allow others to contribute to/modify the design produced, using open source toolchains. This is our way to assure mass collaboration potential. All the tasks are selected to add value to the existing Seed Eco-Home 2 package.

  1. Open Source Arduino Transfer Switch - a 200A, automated transfer switch that senses power level of the battery bank, and switches power from solar inverters to the grid if the battery bank drops below the set level. A simple way to do this is to use Solid State Relays, at 40A each, and an Arduino, for a transfer capacity of 200A. This is to be done without losing power by switching within 1/10 or less of a second. Apparent switching time of an SSR is 1 ms, wo this should be easy to accomplish by 1 ms shutoff followed by 1 ms turn-on, even with loads on. Load management should be such that extra heavy loads such as 15kW pool heater are not on while the transfer operation is taking place
  2. Transfer Switch App - wireless app for android which allows remote control of the transfer switch, over-riding the automatic switch to grid. Person works together with the Arduino Transfer Switch team.
