Talk:Hydrogen ICE
I'm personally not a fan, given it probably will require some sort of Anti-Corrosion Coating if not Stainless Steel / Inconel etc on all the parts in contact with fuel/the combustion chamber to prevent/delay Hydrogen Embrittlement (although if this makes DLC coatings on engine parts mainstream...), BUT i can see to an extent how it could be a " Bridge Technology " Until Fuel Cells , ESPECIALLY Precious Metal Free Fuel Cells become mainstream, but Criticisms of "Bridge Technologies" are quite dammning in my opinion (albeit this is moreso a case of Technological Lock-In rather than Bridge Technology criticism wise, that is mainly used for GHG Emissions and the Renewable Energy Transition if i remember correctly but i'm digressing from my point oof...)
Also if ICE Powered Vehicles / PHEVs etc are still going to exist, i'd prefer things like Methanol , CNG ( RNG / SNG in this case, although Bio-CNG can obviously be blended it, if not even going H-CNG ), or DME be used due to how those negate the Hydrogen Embrittlement / Hydrogen Leak (Not as much a hazard, as an annoyance that must be dealt with, gasoline/natural gas/propane leaks are just as bad if not worse! (Re: Hydrogen Safety ), but hydrogen can "slip past" seals, or even lowkey phase through solid materials (diffuse if you want to be snobby, Gas Barriers and all that are a related note even for non-hydrogen gasses/vapors) so that is a MAJOR challenge (Granted Integration Hell , but) Re NASA's SLS having issues with that (Granted they will probably "iron out" some of those issues, and they are ultra risk adverse (don't want another Apollo 1 etc), but yeah)
Granted also some would make the argument that Fuel Powered vehicles are not a good idea and that we should all go BEV (cynics would point to Lithium Reserves , or given Sodium-Ion Batteries , Global Battery Manufacturing Capacity as making this impossible), but personally i view especially given an Appropriate Materials context there will still be a role for Internal Combustion Engines , heck even [[External Combustion Engines | e x t e r n a l c o m b u s t i o n e n g i n e s] (Re Steam Engine ), but yeah.
As per usual I'm Rambling on a Bit but:
TLDR: (Pure) Hydrogen ICE's are a Bad Idea, but Given Japan's Hydrogen Economy and people's love for cars that go vroom vroom and make gear shifting sounds I can See why it is happening
