Move to OSE Education 2021=

OSE's goal is to create the open source economy - ie, transition the economic system from proprietary to collaborative - a transition to Structural Thriving or Mutually Assured Abundance. See the OSE Vision. OSE is contributing to the Post-Scarcity Economy, where business models are based on Non-Rival Goods or non-scarce resources. Information is non-scarce. When information is combined with hardware in the context of the Open Source Hardware movement, then the result is physical goods beginning to enter the realm of non-scarce resources. Ie, with access to energy, goods can be produced readily from open source blueprints in open source microfactories. This is part of a Regenerative approach to creating economic systems. The revenue models are based on empowerment via access to Financial Independence - not by hoarding of information or of resulting enterprise prowess. A critical component of this empowerment is education.

OSE envisions the creation of an integrated, rapid learning facility - as part of its OSE Campus global village-building. The key is 10x learning in 10x less time - as afforded by structural design dedicated specifically to this purpose. This immersive education must be integrated: spanning applied science, humanities, psychology, economics and more. The basic idea is that responsible denizens or stewards of the Earth must understand how complex ecosystems - anthropogenic and wild - function and how their parts relate to one another.

If you think that such broad learning is impossible due to its large scope - then you are right. If you think that it is indeed possible - you are also right. It is your choice which mental model you hold. If you hold the latter - then read further as we are developing this capacity, so that any individual on earth can have access. Initially, elite thinkers and doers have to develop this paradigm, after which the barriers to entry will be reduced with experience and growth of open-source-ecological-economic power.

Apprenticeships and Education

OSE's approach to solving education is immersive, experiential education. Educational_Facility_Design#Notes_on_Design mentions some basics - a facility with topic-area based bays for rapid learning, documentation, and collaboration.

The goal of OSE's apprenticeships and education programs is to create individuals who are working directly on solving Pressing World Issues - by engaging directly in OSE work with opportunities to move up in leadership and responsibility via merit. Merit is demonstrated by performance.

In our program, first come build skills. Once Apprentices are trained, we encourage advancement by learning how to run crews, and organize new builds. The training is competency-based where apprentices can take on self-paced training and exams outside of the 30 hours/week of paid apprenticeship, for a 40 hour/week egagement. At the 10 hours supplemental learning per week, the classroom hours total about 480 hrs/year for the supplemental training alone.

The minimum expected schedule is a cohort of 24 Apprentices trained fully in 2 years.

  1. Apprenticeships - at 2 years in duration or less as this is competency-based - create a workforce of individuals who in the period starting in 2022 word directly on solving housing by producing an ample supply of affordable homes with significant ecological features. This track provides rapid learning (Construction Bay of Education Facility) via structured lessons across all areas of house build from foundation to roof and utilities, resulting in high earning potential as a skilled worker building Seed Eco-Homes. Training involves a self-guided lesson plan on a computer work-station, numerous hands-on exercises, documentation via time lapse video and publishing on the wiki for exams. Various simulators such as joist hanging are included. Team work includes preparation of house modules, and actual house builds in the field for clients. One growth goal of the Apprenticeship is to identify candidates for taking on new responsibilities such as organizing new builds or running crews.
  2. Leadership Track - Running crews, organizing builds. All the skills necessary - from finding a site and client, to scheduling materials, negotiating building departments, and executing the build. Can be taken after Apprenticeship, or concurrently for highly-motivated individuals. Apprenticeship requirement is waived for any individuals who already have craftsmanship experience in construction or other craft. The ideal situation is several leadership track candidates entering the program with an ambition to run crews, such that these candidates are trained for build leadership to grow OSE's effort. The nature of candidate is an openminded individual who is motivated to work in a social enterprise.
  3. R&D Track - visionary thinking and engagement in pressing world issues - following 4 years of Apprenticeship or Enterprise.
  4. Enterprise Track - coming 2022 after proving the Seed Eco-Home revenue model.

Jon Thoughts - I think the Leadership Track is an emergent property of a functional apprenticeship, which specifically refers to the infrastructure and administrative support. We should plan on an adoption curve, which starts slow, but could grow exponentially. Minimum conditions for attracting the right leadership candidates are:

  • Site infrastructure and quality of life
  • Organizational structure in the form of curriculum, some institutional approval, and administrative support
  • Consistency, Alignment, and credibility of the OSE experience
  • Marketing of OSE progress from Seed EcoHome spec build and/or tiny-house workshops.

Application

To get there, we must start with various assessments and application. Knowing the unique nature of the OSE experience, we focus on an 'interview' consisting of a weekend visit to the OSE Campus, instead of a verbal interview. This way of 'interviewing' is integrated - we ask questions, but we observe how a person thinks, acts, and solves problems in a collaborative environment. The weekend is highly structured to determine specific aspects of a person's character, abilities, tendencies, ways of relating, ways of behaving, and problem-solving skills. OSE values curiosity over judgment, transparency over obscurity, engagement over passiveness, collaboration over solo warriors, teachers over know-it-alls, etc - all the favorable properties of human beings that are universally accepted as positive in context-specific areas - across all areas.

  1. Principles You - to cultivate awareness. On personality archetype, how you think, how you engage with others, and how you apply yourself.
  2. Mental Ability and Numerical Reasoning - such as PI Cognitive Assessment [1]. See the PI Lessons - free interactive training online.
  3. Collaboration vs solo warrior - participation in a build activity.
  4. Student vs know-it-all -
  5. Esteemed and Open to Feedback vs Thin-skinned -
  6. Comfort in both Chaos and Order -
