Overview

General

OSE's program intends to provide a 3 month immersion where people learn practical skills across philosophy, design, build, and enterprise areas related to collaborative design for a transparent and inclusive economy of abundance. The focus is on exactly that: collaborative design for a transparent and inclusive economy of abundance. Our goal is to offer a transformative, practical experience that is unlike anything else in the world.

For example, we don't just build tractors. We build lifetime design tractors using our open source CNC torch table, based on construction set modules, that can be replicated inexpensively anywhere in the world. But even more than this - we teach people how to collaborate - to transformed the economy to open collaboration - just like has happened with open source software forming the backbone of the information economy. And more than this - we cover an integrated approach for building circular economies across multiple sectors: digital fabrication, agriculture, heavy equipment, construction, aquaponics - transforming each industry segment to open source collaboration as we go along. We are far from that goal - yet so close - if only we teach enough people to shift their mindset from scarcity to collaboration. This is exactly our goal: shifting mindsets so we can all collaborate, to make a better world, with open hardware technology. We recognize that appropriate technology is a prerequisite to human evolution, and that human evolution is a prerequisite for a transition to a democratic society.

Structure

  1. Each day consists of 1.5 hours of lecture, 6.5 hours of practice.
  2. Enterprise track involves additional 1.5 hours of class time every evening (8-9:30 PM),
  3. Regular Program is 5 days a week of, with Saturdays as Project Days or Extreme Builds, and Sundays off.

More info:

  1. Regular Program: each day consists of 1.5 hours of lecture and design review, 6.5 hours of practice/build/hands-on activity for the Student Track.
  2. Design review will be an ongoing aspect of the program, in addition to the design/build work. It will happen every morning to discuss what works, what doesn't work, and how to improve designs via rapid prototyping prior to big builds.
  3. During Project Days, teams are actively engaged either in the workshop or in CAD design as highly-coordinated group processes for design and build.
  4. Extreme Builds - General program follows 2 week cycles, where we design 2 weeks - and then do a major build on Friday and Saturday of the second week. The major build follows the format of Extreme Manufacturing: a fast and efficient, collaborative, swarm build. Why Extreme Builds?
  5. During the SummerX, we will also host workshops for outside participants, facilitated by the students in the Enterprise Track as practice for starting their own business. These workshops will occur in the form of OSE's traditional Extreme Build - a rapid, collaborative, swarm build over 2 days of time.

3 Tracks

There will be 3 tracks of related learning, but with different goals:

  1. Track 1: Student track - if you are in college or are interested in diversifying your skill set into open source fab labs for material production of appropriate technology - this is for you.
  2. Track 2: Enterprise track - for individuals roaring to set up their own microfactory to begin producing in their own communities. The goal here is to join a global, collaborative, open source product development effort that is based on creating a closely-knit circle of socially-conscious entrepreneurs with a livelihood based on open source hardware. You will be equipped with a skill set for executing on collaborative design. You will join a group that builds 3D printers, CNC torch tables, plastic recycling equipment, 3D printing filament, aquaponic greenhouses - and eventually cordless drills, brushless electric motors, heavy equipment, housing - and everything else related to material security. What's most interesting: you will join a group that understands that sharing economically significant information is good for everybody - as you will be set on a track of rapid learning to make that part of your lifestyle. The Enterprise Track involves 3 weeks of each month, with 15 sessions at night from 8-9:30 PM, Monday through Friday, for the first 3 weeks of each month.
  3. Track 3: Teacher track - if you are interested in teaching the Open Source Microfactory STEAM Camp, or teaching other custom workshops, this track is for you. This track is included in the Enterprise Track, and includes 25 sessions dedicated specifically to collaborative open source product development curriculum and enterprise around this curriculum.
  4. Enterprise track is dedicated for those who are interested in starting a business related to open source hardware, or who are actively developing such a business and want to do so more collaboratively. Enterprises consi

Enterprise Track

  1. The Enterprise Track is dedicated to those individuals with a serious interest in starting an enterprise based on the subject matter learned. At present, we have documented productivity and revenue milestones that serves as proofs of concept for meaningful enterprises. These enterprises revolve around production of STEAM Camps, production of kits, production of finished machines, and delivery of immersion training programs for collaborative design and build. We are actively developing an open source microfactory and the Open Source Everything Store - to deliver the promise of open source, digitally-assisted fabrication and collaborative design as the new paradigm of economic production
  2. Topics include: Collaborative Literacy for Enterprise Development, Open Source Business Models, 3D Printing Production Engineering, Production Engineering, BOM Specification and Sourcing, Workshop Layout, Quality Control, Certification, Economics of 3D Printing, How to Start an Amazon, Etsy, or Online Store for Your Open Source Hardware Business, Big Picture of the Open Source Economy, Open Source Microfactory Infrastructures - from Home Scale to Off-Grid, Green Microfactory, The CNC Torch Table: Key Tool of the Open Source Microfactory; Production Engineering for Products Made on the CNC Torch Table; How to Post Events on a Wordrpess Site. See Enterprise Track Topics.
  3. This is likewise a collaborative, co-creation process in the format of a seminar where discussion is encouraged. During each seminar, held at the Microhouse, we select documenters/note takers. The demands of participants include active commitment to documenting the lessons learned using cloud collaborative Google Docs.

Teacher Track

The teacher track covers a specific type of enterprise based around education: running STEAM Camps, as opposed to running a more ambitious operation that combines production in the product mix - as in the general Enterprise Track. The Teacher Track - which is included in the Enterprise Track, covers areas specific to providing a great learning experience. Topics include:

  1. Presentation skills, teaching techniques - Socratic method, hands-on, rapid prototyping. How to teach each other.
  2. Understanding Time Binding in Practice - project evolution, versioning, part libraries, logs, continuity.
  3. Basic design principles. Exercise - design a simple object applying all the design principles and observing design degeneracy between participants.
  4. Principles of collaborative design - how to guide a team in a collaborative dev process with Dev Templates, Part Libraries, Version Histories, Visual Histories
  5. Documentation via video - Video Setup for a STEAM Camp. Collaborative Edit process.
  6. Cordless Tool Design - how to think about cordless tools, and the possibilities. Exercise - specifying several modules for the Incentive Challenge
