Eighty five equals three point five billion. This is a troubling equation - representing that 85 of the world's richest people own as much wealth as the 3.5 billion of the world's poorest.

The potential of the open economic development paradigm lies in addressing this equation. The opportunity is the next trillion dollar economy, the open source economy.

What would it mean to bring about the open source economy? From the Open Source Ecology perspective, it would mean that any individual has an authentic choice to participate in one of two forms of economies. The first is the current system, based on centralization and monopoly capitalism. In this system, the general pattern involves that a certain company is pumped up by investors - sometimes based on merit for making human lives better. The [Genuine Progress Indicator https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genuine_progress_indicator] - a measure that includes the distribution of wealth - implies that most companies today are not based on such merit: as GDP grows, the GPI is stagnant. The difference between these curves may be considered as concentration of power and waste.


The second is an economy based on open enterprise - open organizations, collaboration in product development - and in general, access to economic power without competitive waste.

Open Source Ecology is promoting the Distributive Enterprise concept. Distributive Enterprise revolves around the concept of time binding from general semantics - the characteristically human activity of transmitting experience from one generation to another. This ability of future generations to build upon the sum of human knowledge - facilitated by access to information - can be used to create a new economic pattern in society. This pattern - which we call economic time-binding, or Distributive Enterprise - revolves around the concept of enterprises sharing their business models, operations plans, and the myriad of other processes that combine to a successful business.

We are working on three distinct areas of open source information. First, we produce open source blueprints for industrial machines to create an open source industrial system. Second, we are open-sourcing our business models for how we produce these machines. Third, we are producing open organizational models for how successful enterprises engaging in such production can be run. We believe deeply that true sharing has to happen on the economic playing field, and that distributive enterprise is a way to a collaborative economy.

Proposing the OSE Design Guide to align development talent on Roadmap. Exhaustive set of design principles on every front. The intro version and detailed version, focusing on principles rather than details. Appendix with various technicalities explained. Design is main point, where achieving design degeneracy is a critical point of success. This can be the effort that explodes our design capacity nonlinearly. This is phase 1 of massive parallel development. phase 2 is application to other areas of human endeavor outside of integrated, proven design to the R&D phase. This a necessary and nonlinear development that can scale management capacity exponentially. It is a critical ingredient towards method scalability, and can be applied immediately to opensourcing the entire set of industrial mechanical machines with minor electronics and automation.

Value is distributing productive power in harmony with natural life support systems. Assess metrics so they are measuring for the correct things. We favor open source fundamentally - prioritizing absence of competitive waste (sharing of information) over protectionism. Nonnegotiable. OSE's assumption is that existing know how is sufficient to solve all problems, it just has to be applied. Ose assumes that a relatively small effort is required to do something properly - such as a microstate, or open source CAD platform.

Pitfall is wooden print bed. Control electronics is worth redoing. Software with closed loop will be the next evolution.

Specifically on improvent:

  1. Software leveling. Support for bed leveling is in Marlin. Pressure vs. conductivity route. Conductivity can be tricky if gummed with plastic. If we do extra work - might as well do it right. Same level
  2. Replace wood to metal platform.
  3. Controller improvement.
  4. Plexi will cost 40-60$ for 3 or 6 mm plexi. 1.5 sq meters. Wood is $10/sm. USA sourcing - make it both 6 mm and 1/4" for sourcing.

More reliable: assembly. Reducing wear on small parts. Test it on 3DP.

$400 without shipping + $180. 40W laser cutter. Technology assessment on laser cutter 4 printers in office - Koruza units - each one took 1/2kg plastic - 2o Koruza units in 2 week period. 2 weeks. Zero messups. Calibration and tuning - messup only from bad filament. Initial calibration - 1 day of build. Eve of same day you get. Fine tuning. Find optimum temperature, flow of filament, shrinkage. Filament varies between manufacturers.

What can go faster? Sorting out connector.

Novices take about an hour for soldering. Frame under an hour. 3rd hour - trolleys together. Possibly bed assembly if aluminum. 4th hour is belts and pulleys, 5th preparing printhead + extrudere. 6th is mounting electronics and cabling. 7-8 - finalizing. 2 hour breaks. Troubleshooting. 3 instructors per 24 printers. Troubleshooting sprinkled throughout process. Check correctness. No QC list.

Electronics - 1 hour prep - 1 hr put it. At least 1 hr, possibly down to 1/2 hour for electronics.

Buying steppers with connectors, or board with all connections.

Next version of electronics. Optimizing electronics makes sense only with volumen - 1000. BC of added cost. There is no really good controller for a 3D printer. No need really. Optimized controller - easier connectability. Integrated on board. RAMPs does some.

4 workshops decreased with time. Instructors got up to speed. First run - 16 hours with only Luka, to 8-10 hrs - more instructors and less.

16 people just Mustafa. 4 workshops of 16-24 people. With 24, thereabout 3 instructors. Need one instructor who instructs, and one who advises. For a person who hasn't soldered before, still doable. Electronics should be treated as a black.

Everything shoudl be set up with electronics is a black box.

What was most difficult in build? Small things. Not much.

Small details of how to put it together, etc.

OS top 3 - that you make. 1. Troublemaker 2. too many custom parts in Ultimaker. Repraps 3. Kossel or delta - simple but dead volume.

To produce - no more than 1 hour for shell. Could be 45 minutes with 3D printer. Birchwood. Significant smoke with birchwood.

For play - do a printrbot jr.

Optimizations - aluminum bed, possibly simpler electronics, possibly autolevel.

Complaint on Forum - "Something wrong with my printer" - but it was settigs. Part fails on build- if sourced from china. Order 10% more than you need.

CNC Torch - recision of 1/2 mm is good enough. 1m by 1m. Plasma cutters are cheap - $300 cheapo. Combo plasma + welder.

Lukas Winter discussion. Open source MRI, agrees that change can happen only if it's open source. $1/magnet - then you need a specific field. SNR may be bad, or scan time may be double. Cost is in the liquid helium. Expected reduction is 10-20 lower. Personally lukas interested in MRI for those who do not have access. Ex Zambia they have 2 MRI systems. They can't find technicians that are able to use the system. The liquid helium is the main cost of the system. Operating costs - $1M scale for machine - then 10% service and maintenance. Discussion with Musti of Koruza. It would take 3 months of work to next prototype of Troublemaker 3D printer - an improved version. 100 Troublemakers have been built to date. Koruza is not interested in production, but OSE is interested due to Tractor Construction Set prototyping using a combination 3D Printer/Small Laser Cutter for parts/square tubing . 2 printers $2k in materials cost at single quantity, $5-6k overall budget including materials to hire one of Musti's developers and user community of 100. Per prototype cost is $750. The part that makes it cheaper is - just about all parts bought in bulk save about $250. Bulk buy of screws and mechanics, electronics. Electronics can get even cheaper than existing. Existing includes motor + power supply - 110Euro in a quantity of 100 - 200Euro for one of them - for current electronics.
